My wife is a teacher, and a pacifist. She would refuse to carry but many wouldn't. Teaching is a highly stressful business and how long would it be before Mr or Ms teacher somewhere snapped and opened up on the class and took them out?
This issue is so far removed from the reality of life here in Europe is is very hard for us to understand any justification for any non security professional having any kind of access to any kind of firearm.
Most of the peer reviewed studies agree that gun ownership makes you 3-5 times as likely to die by shooting compared to gun owners and that figure rises when the owners actually try to use the firearm in defence.

There were no guns back then of course. Those who live by the gun, die by the gun. Try telling that to the gun and bible toting lot. I've asked them: where in the New Testament does Jesus tell you to arm yourself with war rifles? They never answer. I have one such "friend" on facebook, but our conversations are very frustrating.

The statistic that I find stunning is that for every NRA member there 70 non-NRA members. Why are we letting them run us around like they are?

Many of us have seen those stats. I once saw one that said if you had a gun in your house and it was known you were more likely to get broken into. A gun registered to someone else is highly sought after and there is a big black market. I just heard this morning that antlers were becoming a black market item. People use pieces of antlers as dog chews so imagine the demand for expensive guns?
Many people do not want to believe these statistics but they forget a lot of things like domestic violence shootings, suicides, shootings of people they mistakenly thought were trying to attack them.
The idea of arming teachers is just as insane as all the other self-serving ideas the gun nuts are and have always spewed. They have had the say and never seem to ask the simple question, "is it getting better or worse?" Sane people know the answer to that!
An NPR interview with a former NRA member and now a doctor showed some reveling facts. He talked of growing up in a Christian household that pushed religion, patriotism and gun ownership. When he started medical school his views started to change. After seeing dead kids with horrible wounds from automatic guns he has had a complete turn about. He says that the NRA says they are here to support the members when in reality they are only supporting the gun industry.

@diabhal Unfortunately, studies like this are increasingly being downplayed and often banned from the corporations that seek to gain from increased gun ownership. It is well known how the cattle and dairy industries condemn studies on meat so imagine how the gun industry operates on gun ownership. It is not about the individual but the for-profit companies.
@diabhal It was the mistakes of the tobacco companies that alerted the NRA and others to the tactic of taking the best extreme offense road as a way to counter any backlash from citizens. They are extremely offensive but it has worked so far.
