If I remember correctly, there is a deep stress fault that stretches all the way from southern California, across southern Arizona and New Mexico, and emerges closer to the surface arounfvEl Paso, Tx.

From that map, northern Colorado is a high stress area. It doesn't surprise me. When I lived there, it wasn't uncommon to hear strange grinding noises coming from deep within the Earth. Like rock layers under tremendous torque, grinding together.
