For those who want to make the largest possible positive impact on NOT harming the environment there are two HUGE things that should be in their life plans:
- Having no kids... enjoy other's kids but don't make more. We have more than enough.
- Live a meat-free lifestyle or at least a low-impact mammal-product free lifestyle.
Most of the rest is largely for appearances and feel-good stuff. Yes, recycle, use solar power, avoid internal combustion... but if you did/do the two things above you've done (or not done) far more than most. It's what you DON'T do that matters most. Of course, you have to start early on these, so encourage young people to follow these two guidelines for life.

I belong to a committee at work called Envirocare. We promote environmental awareness and initiatives at work such as paper and battery recycling. We also raise funds for community activities such as wildlife rescues and sustainable energy programs in schools. Two or three times a year we work on "greening" projects such as roadside cleanups and community gardens. We welcome ideas and resources.
