Last week I attended a public lecture by Dr. Shechtman, Nobel prize in Chemistry 2011. He discovered quasicrystals in 1982 in an alloy of Aluminum and manganese using transmission electron microscope. Before his discovery, crystals were necessarily ordered and periodic. By ordered we mean that we can predict the positions of atoms given the position of a single atom (when the crystal is an atomic crystal). Dr Shechtman observed structures that were ordered but not periodic and these are now called quasicrystals. His discovery was vehemently opposed by the great chemist Linus Pauling and his prejudice caused some hardship to Dr. Shechtman. In the end balance of proof was firmly in Dr. Shechtman's side.
