One reporter says my town looks like a war zone.

An EF-3 tornado (wind speed 160 mph) that was a half mile wide took a 17 mile trip through Seneca, SC. Our home was spared because we were a half mile off the path. Seneca won't get back to normal for months.

Our electricity was out for a couple of days. In our all electric home, we had to break out the camping gear. We have a stock pile of batteries and propane, so we had all the comforts of the third world. In our corner of South Carolina, there was four tornadoes with 85,000 people without power. Local utility companies say some residents will be without electricity for months.

It hit Monday. Seneca has many roads are closed to prevent rubber neckers from holding up relief workers who are getting trees, power poles, etc., off the roads, houses and businesses. About half of the three mile road I live on is closed for that reason. Police stop people from going too far down our road.

Now that we have our electricity back, we've been surfing you tube to see all the videos about the damage to our area.

We're also re-charging our battery backups for the relatives without power and making ice deliveries to Petunia's daddy. He's without power.

Tomorrow ought to be a great time to get in on all the free neighborhood BBQ once freezers finish defrosting.

In the meantime, I have to deal with a temporary spouse who's having survivor guilt.

Having lived in countries where reliability of supply was unknown, I have developed a paranoia about relying on one thing only.
So, my cooker is bottled gas, but I have a unit with twin electric hot plates. I have oil lamps and pressure lamps available. I also have a large, purpose built barbecue unit with storage space for both wood and charcoal. I have a large reserve water tank on my roof. My hot water is supplied via a gas heater, but I have a small immersion heater as well.
I have an automatic, standby LED lighting system, with a couple of large batteries, that can supply lighting to my house for a week.
.... and I still know there's room for improvement. I must buy a generator for the freezer, for instance.

One of my friends tied in a solar recharge for the non-interruptible battery backup on her freezer.

I joke about it but I could do with a steam powered computer with a hand crank if it wasn't for trimming the wick.

Posted by Reason-AbleI’m 54 and bored. I needed a project and decided to buy a truck and make it my project. I’ve been adding little mods to it every weekend. Any other vehicle enthusiasts in the group?

Posted by flower_nutMy mother's best friend worked for the local newspaper and decided to dress me as a leprechaun and use it for Saint Patrick's Day. I was a smiling leprechaun, whatever that was?
