I love this song. But, I find it odd that it is taken to be religious. Yes, it uses the language of religion, but it is about erotic love, sex, longing and heartbreak.

You are correct Cohen was mocking religion when he wrote this...but the religious just have o hear the word Hallelujah and they become ecstatic!
What else would you expect from Cohen?
@glennlab : True, but religious people don''t (at least not any I know) interpret it that way. Sexual desire, lust, is seen as sinful and weakness (men losing their power to women) That is why I find it so ironic that so many of them hear this song and think it is about praising god, when it's closer to praising an orgasm.
