Steeleye Span - The Ups and Downs
Although I was born 7 miles towards London from Aylesbury my birth was registered there rather than Amersham or Chesham. The Chiltern Hills are very much Ups and Downs.
This is in answer to M's birthplace memories! I spent my first 21 years based in a house on the hills. I thought that everywhere was built on chalk with flints all around.
Ah the distinctive voice of Maddy in her prime.
Up & downs! We used to disparagingly call the Southerncounties landscapes "chocolate box" compared to the rugged grandeur of the Lakes, Wales & Scottish Highlands. Even our bleak dour satanic Pennine Moors were preferred!
You will recall that before 1800 the areas to which you yearn were regarded as truly dangerous and once the mills started the valleys as Satanic. But I admit I loved the Lakes (especially Great Langdale) and being on the moors.
A charming part of the English countryside I’ll admit, close enough to London to make the property prices sky-high and it has a large population who commute daily. Nice folk music from a very popular band.
She came from St Albans. I sang at her club once. 1000 people daily commuted from our railway station. My father walked the 1/2 mile down and back up every day. Yes, property prices compare with Vancouver. I believe the village and surroundings comprised about 5000 in my time. We could see Roald Dahl's house on the other side of the valley. He went to the same church. The Political Church of Convenience for Henry VIII. I loved the beechwoods and miss them greatly but when last camped in them I missed the wild ness of where I now live.
@rogerbenham Actually Roger she was born in my hometown, Blackpool but missed out on being ripened there!
