We tend to think of early 20th century Jazz only in the context of the USA, New Orleans in particular, and certainly that’s where it’s roots belong, but in the first half of the century there was also a strong European jazz movement…and two of the pioneers were Belgian born jazz guitarist & composer Jean “Django” Reinhardt and French jazz violinist Stephane Grappelli. They teamed up and founded the first all string jazz bands - the Quintette du Hot Club de France - in Paris in 1934. Here they are live in 1939 with “J’attendrai Swing”.
