His voice is unique and just marvellous. How singers of that generation didn’t ruin their voices I don’t know. I remember in my early singing days that quite a few really quite eminent singers smoked, it always amazed me. I do think it alters the voice, it lowers it a bit and makes it huskier.... a definite no-no for a soprano! David Bowie smoked when singing on stage...ugh! Most rock singers not only smoked tobacco, but other substances, and snorted cocaine too. That was bound to alter their ability to sing, and to sustain notes. Their airways and respiratory tract must have be compromised greatly. My fav...Morten, neither smokes or does drugs, and only drinks a moderate amount....he could not still sing 4+ octaves and hold a note for 20+ seconds at age 60 otherwise.
