I can see the point about wearing HiVIS clothing in Industrial situations from the OH and S aspect of things since I worked on the N.S.W. Railways for over 10 years, but it beats me why, in broad daylight, people seem to NEED to wear HIVIS clothing, etc, for merely walking down a footpath in a CBD, etc, or riding a motorbike or a pushbike,
At night it'd be a safe thing to do, but in broad daylight?
I rode motorbikes for years and never wore leathers, except for a leather jacket in winter or when it was raining, always rode with my headlight and taillight on day or night even when they weren't 'hot-wired' in as they are now. Only ever had 2 prangs, 1 was due to a bus driver who couldn't be bothered to give way to a vehicle on his right hand side and the other to a drunk, so tanked up to eyeballs, that before he failed to give way to me on his right hand side he had clipped 2 parked cars less than 100 feet away. Both prangs happened at night, both times my light were on and both times it was in well lit streets.

@Triphid The only comment that I can make on bike accidents relates to my brother who was killed riding a brand new 650cc Honda by another inexperienced bike rider hitting him head on at a corner on my brother's side of the road. It was at dusk and the other rider was wearing an illegal black-visored helmet. My brother taught the London Metropolitan Police how to ride motorbikes. He was killed instantly. The other biker lost an eye and I was told was banned for three months.

@FrayedBear Some people, in my opinion, should NEVER be allowed to drive cars or ride motorbikes let alone even push a pram.

And if you dare question the competency or efficiency of medical practitioner including his efficiency at ripping off medicare with overcharging, you will be escorted out by the police and charged with causing a disturbance then banned for 3 months and fuck their duty of care to patients.

In Victoria they are now pushing for mandatory retesting for license at 70.

On my recent travel up to NSW and back I had an interesting chat in the middle of the road at the Khancoban / Cooma junction of the highway in the Snowy Country with a French couple who have lived in Europe for the last 20 years. They could not believe how retarded & backward Australia has become as a consequence of the Australian governments since Howard gained power in 1996.

@FrayedBear that’s interesting. I came to Australia 12 years ago from England and the first thing that struck me is how lovely the people are; friendly, a sense of human and able to laugh at themselves. Totally refreshing and liberating. Not returned to Blighty since and no intention.

@FrayedBear agree with all that. Howardism corrupted Australia, and still does, including the ALP indirectly. Sorry to say, but this country is so full of Anglo arrogant shit it stinks. And I'm Anglo Australian, but non AA mindset. I can't bear any Oz media, I can't bear the ABC, and I cannot listen to the brainlessness of Oz politics for any length of time.

@Geoffrey51 What part of the UK did you come from and what occupation do you pursue? I came down from NSW 12 years ago and in Western Victoria have completely the opposite experience to that described by you.
I always use the comparison of my 50th birthday bash in NSW and my recent invite of people to my housewarming a few years ago. In NSW I was living off the grid the life in many eyes of a "derro". I invited 50 people in the height of winter to join me al fresco for a 5-course meal. 47 people attended and we partied 1-7 pm. In Victoria, 60 people were invited to dinners to be made up of 6 to 8 diners at a time. Suitable dates were requested in the formal RSVP invitations. Only two people responded and neither proffered a date. I love the climate and the environment here, the people are mainly deficient and avoided if possible.

I came here from Hastings on the south coast of England to Melbourne initially for an auditing company and now live in Tatura, near Shepparton working for Sharp. I must say I prefer rural Vic to metro but I am sure it would have driven me nuts when I was younger!

@FrayedBear I have nothing but contempt for Hawke and Keating now. And they still argue over who was greater. Great if defined as destroying the ALP for a generation, helping Howard move the country to the far right, and expunging every progressive policy of the ALP. I read with satisfaction that, though frail, Gough Whitlam told Hawke exactly that, after the full impact of the 'Hawke Keating' reforms was known. Slimy Shorten is in the H-K mould. What hope is there. The rank and file wanted Albanese, but the NSW union and factional Right wanted Shorten. Of course. If they win the next election it will be despite Shorten, not because of him. I am far from convinced they will. They'll only have themselves and their faction boses to blame if they lose.

@David1955 For quite a number of years Baby faced Walker, the Australian Attorney General was my local member. The year Labor were thrown out I spoke with him and was told that as 52% of voters are women, Labor was not going to do anything to upset them - like making law that gave men equality.
