I enjoy doing realistic carvings although they take quite a bit more time than the miniatures or the caricatures. Research increases, the carvings are generally larger, definitely not miniatures and the textures on animal carvings take probably almost as long as actually carving the piece.
This is an elk "bust" that I did. He is 8" high at the highest point of his antlers. The antlers are carved separately, soaked in wood hardener before carving, then attached with an epoxy after carving. The whole thing is painted with acrylic paints then a dry brushing of white over the body creates the highlights on the fur. The eye is painted then coated in a clear gloss substance. The whole carving is then sealed with a spray, semi-gloss or matte sealer. A bit of texture was added the "snow" on this one create a little rough snow look.
