How not to do it. I have written erotica on occasion and found that whist the plot line is quite straightforward. It does throw up some challenges. Repetition being the main one. There are only so many words for body parts, plus simple words like "he", she, they" also good sex is about doing the same thing over and over for quite some time. This does not make good reading.
I would welcome other writers input on these problems. In the meantime here is some bad writing that managed to get published.

The length of the description of the ending of the event is directly related to the length of the build up.

Thanks for the link. Some really great images.

What is wonderful is enough people read those bits for them to make the worst list.

Is this a great world or what?

What's the problem? If you have a couple that are repeatedly at it, give them their own way to provide variety. They could be working their way through the Kama Sutra, or they could be trying to invent new positions having run out of established ones. They could be obsessed with doing it in inappropriate places, such as in churches and on roundabouts or traffic islands. Maybe they like to do it in the style of famous people, recreating infamous encounters. Make them raving perverts and reward the reader (who is likely looking for inspiration) with ideas. If it's different people at it throughout the book, you have more freedom still. If it's a long-married couple, have the woman read a book throughout so that she can comment upon it as if she's completely uninterested in or unaware of what her husband's up to. If it's a politician, have a team of servants whip him throughout. And don't be afraid to do comedy - if it's a group of politicians having a serious meeting, make sexual action between them the main event while they make important decisions. Use your imagination - that's what it's for.

More ideas: have the woman's mother sit in the corner of the room to observe and provide a critical commentary - that way, you don't have to describe the action directly, but have her do it for you.

If the couple are fat, compare them to elephant seals. Have them both fart on first bounce, leading to hysterics, and then to asphyxiation.

Put them in a boat and describe the ripples on the water instead of the direct action. Have a gull fly over and wheel away in alarm at what it sees.

Feel free to steal my ideas - I have no desire to write sex scenes, so they're wasted on me.

I found the same problem. I commited to writing 10 stories in 10 weeks (a few years ago) got through 5 before i split with the client. (Ghostwriting gig) i tried to entwine characters from each story with the next . Like a doorman at a hotel lusting over guest; then he showed up at sex museum; whose clerk went home to watch neighbors through window.... Each one a different story. The repetition in the details were intellectually cumbersome. I am currently unemployed and there is an erotic salon in philly. I was thinking about revisiting the genre just to get some word time in and maybe make some new friends? Don't really have any advice, just saying you're bot alone.

An interesting trick to link stories a la "la Ronde".
Erotica got me into writing in the first place. I was on a hook up site but it had a dating diary. In it one could write no holds (or holes) barred stories. There is no greater incentive than the prospect of getting laid to apply oneself to the keypad. However simple "porn" became not engaging enough after a while. The last time I went there was this.

oh an addendum to my previous comment: it's not impossible, actually. read ragtime by doctorow. there is erotica in there that isn't porn. then read sophie's choice by styron. some of those chapters are intended to be erotica. they're not. they're porn. they're also irrelevant to the story. styron did his otherwise really fine novel a disservice. the movie wisely left those chapters out.

I know what you mean. I think sometimes publishers ask an author (or maybe they get the hint) to add sex into the mix in order to sell. I think this can ruin a good read like putting ketchup on a meal.

@273kelvin especially ice cream!

when i glommed onto the tv series quantum leap, i had also just glommed onto the internet and found i was not alone in liking the show. i discovered then that there was such a thing as fan fiction, and was not especially surprised to discover it almost without exception sucked. what surprised me was how much of it was "erotica," except it was actually outright porn. i hope you will not be offended that i do not acknowledge erotica as a thing, not as a thing that actually involves sex, anyway. (i saw a car commercial once that had no living beings in it, but the way they photographed the car was erotic.) everything people call erotica is soft porn. and you hit the nail on the head, at least one of its heads, as to why: the repetition of the vocabulary (not to mention the mechanics). the other head is pacing: one paragraph of hello how are you, six pages of heavy breathing and increasingly ridiculous names for body parts, half a paragraph of well that was fun, thanks and bye -- that's bad pacing and bad reading as you say. i redefined print porn at that time: anything that isn't about koreans or bells and uses the word "dong" outside of quotation marks is porn.

solution? well they're twofold. 1. write actual erotica, and don't put any actual intercourse in it. 2. give up and write porn.

I don't know if you would class this as "porn" or erotica. Please forgive any grammatical errors as this was my 1st published work.

@273kelvin soft porn. a little cute. cuter if not soft porn, actually. cuter if... pardon me but i have been a magazine editor, am a writer, have been an english teacher -- all the sentences were sentences (a rule i am breaking in this comment but this is informal writing). (thatcher spelled her name margaret, by the way). i am not trying to be mean -- i figure you're asking in earnest so i am answering likewise.

@genessa Yes I know it has flaws. Having failed sandpit it was just a deep joy to get published at all.

@273kelvin i congratulate you on that!
