If I recall, 'ubuntu' is from the Nguni Bantu people represented by the major kingdoms of Zulu, Ndebele, Xhosa, Swazi, Mpondo, and Tsonga. All these peoples had a nasty habit of killing one another with some regularity. The idea of 'ubuntu' goes way back, but their adopting of the philosophy, tenuous at first, can be traced back to Mandela. It is good to see that they are putting down their spears and machetes, rifles, pistols, knives, and hand grenades and taking up a somewhat more peaceful way of living. One last thing, all the Bantu peoples were quite sophisticated with incredibly strong societies and I think the war between the British and the Zulu represents one of the saddest and most needless conflicts in history. Many misunderstandings on both sides, though I think I might feel a bit more for the Zulu.
Now, the only reason I mentioned all that is that it is a sign that change is possible.
