On a personal note, from my home state of Ohio----VIA The Ohio Green Party
Our state representatives want to bail out one of our electric providers. 1 billion dollars! As you read this statement that came across my facehack page it should bring to mind an article I post with others occasionally when I'm trying to get people to understand both establishment parties have the same goal. Who's on the same page with me and can name that article and its writer?
First Energy wants a bail out for its unprofitable, crumbling, leaking old nuke plants. That's why they hand picked twelve Republicans to run in the 2018 primaries and donated tons of money to Speaker of the Ohio House, Larry Householder. That's why they created House Bill 6. Now, HB6 right now does a bunch of other stuff, like eliminating efficiency standards and Ohio's rather wimpy renewable energy program. Understandably, there has been a ton of opposition to HB6, from testimony before the legislature to letters and lobbying, to letters to the editor, to protests in the streets.
So, State Sen. Steve Wilson has floated the idea in the Akron Beacon-Journal of going ahead and giving First Energy its billion dollar bailout, but eliminating the rest of the horrible things in HB6. In these times, Democrats and many "environmental" organizations have been trained to look at this as a "win." But, make no mistake, this would be a terrible loss for the environment, Ohio's economy, and future generations.
Giving First Energy exactly what it has wanted from the beginning is no victory. In fact it would show all major corporations that all they have to do in Ohio to get what they want is spend a few million buying legislators and and taking out deceptive TV ads, and then the sky's the limit.
Threatening the efficiency program which saves Ohio businesses and consumers billions of dollars each year, and threatening the renewable energy portfolio program which has created good paying jobs for 100,000+ Ohioans is a bluff. We need to call that bluff.
I've watched for decades now as Republicans have caused liberals and environmental groups to expend tremendous amounts of energy trying to "defend" natural areas and policies which protect the environment and people. Usually what happens is that the Republicans "settle" for something less than they were pretending they wanted. The liberals declare "victory," but the planet keeps dying.
It's time we stood up to these bullies. Ohio will be better off when the nuke plants close. They will stop leaking tritium into Lake Erie. With them gone, there will be more demand for wind and solar energy. We will stop generating tons of deadly nuclear wastes, and we will all be safe from the constant threat of another nuclear power plant meltdown. THAT would be a victory in this fight. Nothing less.
