Global meat consumption and disease. Atlantic monthly [theatlantic.com]

This is an area even I didn’t understand the risk posed by global meat consumption. Another fact that this article strongly suggests is that global hunger and pandemics are a big byproduct of the meat industries. This is a long article and one that will not be pleasant. However, some of us give a damn and are open to information regardless of its emotional impact. I think the price of our comfortable lifestyle is vigilance, knowledge and a willingness to learn and adapt.

A couple of powerful comments: ”…Marburg virus, Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever, chikungunya virus, yellow fever [Influenza]. These are all zoonotic diseases, which originate in animals and spill over into humans.” and ”Among all known pandemic threats, influenza is widely regarded as the most dangerous. …But while experts fretted about H5N1 in birds in the East, new strains of H1N1 were evolving within pigs in the West. One of those swine strains jumped into humans in Mexico, launching outbreaks there and in the U.S. in early 2009.” ”Even in no-pandemic years…the more familiar strains kill some 500,000 people around the globe.”

Of course. This topic gets almost as much ire up as religion. Been down that road many, many times but their position always lacks evidence, reason or even empathy. It is purely about emotion! The article is simply about historical and proven facts and a big warning.
