There are other foods besides soy that will give you more health that soy. Lately I have seen some negative articles from the health concerned organizations about using soy.

As someone of Asian origin, I’ve eaten soy products like tofu practically since birth. It’s a very commonly eaten food in a lot of Asian countries. Incidents of cancer and obesity are much lower among Asians. And fertility is definitely not an issue. Most of the people in my other veggie groups agree soy products are safe enough to eat. A lot of the soy myths have been debunked in recent studies. That said, consumption of any processed foods should be limited.

I’ve also heard that soy is genetically modified at least partially to remove the allergenic component.

If you don’t want to eat soy, there are lots of other options. I will continue to eat it but very rarely would I eat the highly processed forms. I’m not vegan for my health but my latest blood work shows that everything is within normal range.

I'm confused about the link between cancer and soy, if there is one. I am a survivor of breast cancer and I never did get a clear answer on whether or not I should be avoiding soy.

Unfortunately, I have to disagree with one point you made about allergens in soy. The truth is there's a school of thought that GE foods are provoking allergies. The most common reason any food item is genetically engineered is to make it highly resistant to pesticides, particularly Roundup. Consequently they are able to use massive amounts on them and increase their yield, but that can't be good for anybody. But the neonicotinoids are also killing the bees and the butterflies.

Many people don't understand the different between genetic modification and genetic engineering. GM is done by a farmer's hand... for example mixing the DNA of two different apples, or a peach and a plum. GE, on the other hand, is done in a laboratory, and quite often includes the introduction of DNA from a foreign species, i.e. a bacterium into the host species... to make it frost resistant, or to retard spoilage, etc.

If you want to avoid GMO's, read the first digit on the produce sticker. 4 is conventional, 9 is organic and 8 indicates it's been genetically engineered.

@TheoryNumber3 I understand clearly what is involved in genetic engineering as I had studied biology in the past. There are many reasons why crops are genetically engineered. I don’t have the source about soy being genetically modified for allergens. I only said that I heard about that from someone who has biology/biochemistry knowledge.

And no I don’t try to avoid GMO’s specifically but a lot of what I eat happen to be GMO free.

@graceylou There's so much conflicting information out there. I worked extensively with a GMO right to know group, and we had a lot of trouble filtering out fact from fiction. But the general conclusion was that GMOs are good for corporations , bad for people and terrible for the environment. I won't eat anything that isn't marked GMO free.

Most soy is genetically engineered these days also, unless it's clearly marked and certified organic. I do love edamame, but after watching that video, I don't think I'll be eating it again

Doesn't surprise me at all. I've been working for several years to eliminate ALL processed "foods" from my diet. That pretty much includes anything with a list of ingredients. We really do not know what the re-mastered ingredients lists and all the fractionals removed, re-engineered, re-constituted, or added are doing on the organs and at cellular levels. I trust clean fruits and veggies right from the farmer... and not much else.
