davknight comments on Mar 20, 2019:
Actually, both Britain and the US officially ended slavery in 1808. But in the US, it didn't apply to slaves already here. And it didn't stop the smuggling of slaves into the country.
Beowulfsfriend replies on Mar 20, 2019:
Nor did it stop the slave ships as the Navy did little to intervene in their movements. The British Navy did more to stop the slavers than the US, greatly so. Many of the wealthier Southerners who still had cash at war's end tried to move themselves and their slaves to Brazil. There are still small cities of their descendants there. The Brazilian government stopped many from importing slaves however, they had laws similar to the US pre war, and even Brazil ended slavery in 1867.
Just read that Elizabeth Warren will fight for slavery reparations.

There was a great black and white movie about sin eaters. Maybe it was an episode of the Twilight Zone....but it haunts my memories of childhood horror stories.... I remember a son had to do it because his father, the sin eater, died. He didn’t want to do it...but the family needed the money ...
Beowulfsfriend replies on Mar 19, 2019:
That is the mythos. And I have seen the show, with the starving sin getting to pig out. In olden days, the sin eater ate and took home much of the food for his family. Only if you believer such stuff should the job be scary. However, on more thought, anyone willing to hire said person would have to be a real wack case. One could meet some real dangerous types.
I'm sure we all have done this

C'mon global warming, where the hell are you?
MissKathleen comments on Mar 17, 2019:
You are seeing global warming in action. Climate change and extreme weather irregularities are what global warming does. Hot places may be hotter, but cold places get more “weather”. Your wish has been obliged!
Beowulfsfriend replies on Mar 17, 2019:
This is the message that needs to be put out. Snow will still happen, so some damn asshole congressman with a snowball isn't disproving climate change. Temperature variations abound, but overall the Earth keeps heating and most ice keeps melting. There will be greater wet in some places and greater dry in others. There will be anomalies - recent regrowth of some snow on Kilimanjaro and the Antarctic ice sheet (although, I'm not sure either continues to occur).

@whispers Louisiana uses the French system of law as opposed to the rest of the nation and the English common law. Education law was pretty much standardized by the Supreme Court in a couple cases in the 60's.
Do we know if Socrates was a historical character or a literary device used by Plato?
Phin comments on Mar 14, 2019:
Very interesting... if Socrates was not a real man but a literary device created by Plato, then the teachings of Socrates are the teachings of Plato. This would increase Plato influence on the world by at least a factor of Socrates...Thereby creating the teachings of Platocrates
Beowulfsfriend replies on Mar 14, 2019:
There is even a school of thought that Socrates was real, his execution, etc, and that Plato's works are still Plato's and he is just using Socrates as a means to get attention for his writings.

@whispers there is an interesting story from Louisiana, long ago (60 minutes covered it). A guy shot, on camera at an airport, the sexual abuser of his 10 year old son. The DA pushed for 1st degree murder and the jury could only convict in that and nothing else. In LA, the jury convicts but the judge punishes. The jury was unwilling to see the guy get a possible death sentence so they voted innocent. All who were interviewed agreed some jail time should have happened, but they didn't trust the judge. I've always wondered about the DA - was he an idiot, or a genius who wanted the guy left free?

Trump grounds those airplanes.... Finally did something right! Too little, too late?
Beowulfsfriend comments on Mar 14, 2019:
Late and needed pressure. He didn't cause any crashes, the world hasn't done much either. No credit for being forced into the right thing. Trump also praised the "great" company of Boeing. However, with new pilot reports coming out, there may be a question on what Boeing knew or covered up.
Beowulfsfriend replies on Mar 14, 2019:
@Cutiebeauty that is a possibility. Trump does hold responsibility for the FFA not being involved. Just remember the FFA aren't the only air investigators worldwide, so, who knows what they would have found, or covered up for Boeing. This last crash has been screwed up by the German investigations as they held the black boxes even after they realized they couldn't read the data and needed to send them to France. I won't be surprised if something comes out about the plane and tRump doubles down on support for Boeing.
