I've been studying corvids (crows, ravens, magpies etc...) for well over 10 years now. My name is actually crow in pali. All of the animals you mentioned have similar frontal cortex communication structures. Parallel evolution. Each of those species (along with orca) also lives within complex social structures that they rely upon for everyday life. It's not a coincidence that they all also exhibit extreme stress and emotion over the loss of one of their group. They all exhibit empathy. They understand the golden rule.

I have been looking at some rather interesting thoughts regarding the flooding of the earth after the last ice age and how it corresponded to changes in the geography of SE asia - specifically the capital of Lord Krishna's era. The time is also posited to be that which was spoken of by Plato as the period of Atlantis. My reading is to learn of the origins of vedic literature that was the basis for the upanishads. The aryans carried in their rituals and beliefs across the hindu kush and into the indus valley where they encountered a vast, intelligent culture already thriving. Those rituals and stories came from as far west as the isles of britania and as far north as the nordic lands. This is how we see so many of these fables intermixed and the sanskrit itself shows portions of nordic runes and celtic ritual. I just find the history fascinating and useful for discussion.

JeffMesser replies on Mar 5, 2018:
The triple gem is a bit of a misnomer. It means that you seek refuge in the Buddha, the sangha, and the dharma. The Buddha, generally, refers to Shakyamuni Buddha. The sangha means others who have gone through the search you are encountering and taken refuge in Buddhist thought or really just any vedic thought - a community. And the dharma meaning the texts and writing and other teachings of this community. This is seeking refuge in the triple gem.

JeffMesser replies on Mar 5, 2018:
I work in criminal law and I see evidence of karma daily. People hang out with the "wrong crowd" and bad things happen - because they are more likely to put themselves in bad situations. I also do volunteer work and I see it there daily. A person starts off down and they force a smile upon their face and by the end of the day they are happy and making others happy. You not only change or continue your own fate but you affect that of others. Science is a wonderful tool but we have yet to crack its' applications on a holistic level with clear understanding. A smile forces chemical changes in the body due to a physical reaction to the muscles used which leads to endorphins being released which aids in alleviating stress which propagates more good feelings and also changes the tenor of our speech and interactions which achieves a similar effect in others which makes you a person others tend to flock around which changes your social structure which supports a more healthy personal social order etc... It ALL interacts. And to the extent that it all interacts each little wheel drives the ones behind and in front of it. Affecting any one has a tendency to affect them all. I used to show my friends this picture to describe it ...

it's all a matter of perspective my friend. there's a reason that Shakyamuni Buddha never directly addressed the self-no self issue. the idea that consciousness filtered thru our body yields the self also implies that the consciousness is elsewhere after that body perishes. if that consciousness finds itself in a lower-echelon form then the hindu concept of reincarnation is met while also following the logic implored in the gita and the upanishads (brihadaranyaka).

Most atheist and agnostics I know are liberal. I know a few libertarian types too, but yeah, most are. I'm in New Orleans, which is a blue city in a red state so I don't know if that has anything to do with it.
JeffMesser replies on Mar 4, 2018:
@A2Jennifer I believe in that second reasoning you give also. I have found over the years that the persons who have encountered more cultures and meshed with them in daily life have a tendency to be way more tolerant of the views of others. way more. This is why I believe we increase tolerance and accrue the strength offered by diversity by mingling cultures instead of letting these min-chinatowns and other isolated areas of foreign culture and push more integration. Like Brown vs. Topeka.

PeterJohn comments on Mar 3, 2018:
Kauva,I think you are correct.I am very left leaning but not very academici intelligent that I am not sure,I leave that to others to judge me,but over all I think Agnostics and Athiests are left leaning and more intelligent than religious types.otherwise why would they believe in a tooth fairy ...
JeffMesser replies on Mar 3, 2018:
I am working on some sociology theories regarding "me" versus "we" thinking and I think the main variable is intelligence. Then there is a mid point where both exist and various factors influence whether they change or not.
