I know a lot of good kind theists. However what I've found is that religion is a band-aid fix for human problems. We humans crave structure, God and religion offer structure, religion teaches people to be kind or to partake in or not partake in certain behaviors.
An example I saw was this Islamic video on how a girl wandered away from her group, got lost at night and knocked on a Muslim's door. He set her up separate from him and didn't try anything. But he freaked her out because all night he was burning his fingers on a candle. She leaves the next day, unscathed. He admits she was extremely seductive and all night he fought the urge to try something by reminding himself of the flames of hell by burning his fingers.
Fellow Muslims congratulate each other on their beautiful religion that teaches them to keep from raping by remembering the flames of Hell.

This is nothing more than a band-aid for what the real problem is : a lack of respect for a vulnerable female/human
We should not need fear in order to conduct ourselves properly.
We should simply not steal, murder, rape....etc out of respect for each other.

I wonder if that was a propaganda video reminding the faithful of the dangers of evil women...and of course all women are seductresses. TBH, it's hard for me to think that happened, but religious people do very strange things.

It seems like every other year or so a Christian will kill themselves and maybe their kids bc gawd sed so. Sometimes that's self-mutilation like Paul encourages and sometimes it's going into a snowstorm. Muslims in many disparate areas think killing gays, infidels and uppity women is just swell too.

I can't remember which atheist said this, but I rape exactly as much as I want to. That number happens to be zero bc rape is disgusting and I don't need goat herder (lol or goat fucker) holy words telling me not to rape, murder...

I do think religion had enormous utility for most humans at one point but I keep paraphrasing a favorite mental health truism, what you once did to survive is your greatest limitation.

Regarding your last sentence, why should one not commit these crimes if he or she can get a living or get richer, given that they won't be caught? Why exactly, at an individual level is it better to respect others rather than try to better yourself at other's expense? This might sound ridiculous, but in a poor society, it's a valid question. For such a society to grow, people need to be able to trust each other. If the society is at a stage where it can meet most of the individual needs, trust would be easier to establish. On the other hand, in dog eat dog kind of society, we need something else to foster trust. Shared religion might be one such tool. Fear of consequences in the afterlife etc is a good deterrent from committing crimes and hence a tool to build trust.

This also explains why two of the largest religions today are monotheistic which create uniformity across a large society and enable trust between people from otherwise different cultures.

Really good people would not need the threat of the flames of hell to keep them from molesting young girls.
That's us, guys. I'm proud of you all.

I'm curious to understand why you said "women/human" Human comes from the Latin word Humanus meaning "of man." Evil exists everywhere but it seems to concentrate around conflict between two religions.

Have you seen Christopher Hitchens discussion of the Ten Commandments?

Atheists can also hate those who are different. Eg. Islamaphobia.

It's a shame Catholic priests were unable to do the right thing.

Band-aid yes, the rest not so much. Religion teaches people to hate those who are different from you. Religious belief stems mostly from a fear of death or 'the end'.

I was brought up in a Baptist church, and never once was I taught to hate anyone.

I completely agree. But there are people that need to be treated like dogs; they need a treat when they are good or rubbed their noses in it when they are bad. It's unfortunate that we are not teaching our children respect, accountability and reaponsibility. To be a good person out of the kindness of their hearts rather than recognition. It's simple, but not everyone understands.

Crave structure? I had been on my own agenda since age 12.
