1.) A time when your "thing" of interest didn't exist.
2.) Empty space
3) Empty spacetime in the lowest-energy state possible.
4.) Whatever you're left with when you take away the entire Universe and the laws governing it.

The Forbes article was written by Astrophysicist and author Ethan Siegel. He gives a brief description of each of these scientific senses of the word "nothing".
