Something that really pisses me off is when people say "I'm blessed". The arrogance of this statement is blood-curdling - why do these people think they are chosen by a god to receive whatever (food, success, freedom from disease, etc), while others starve, get killed, lose their jobs, etc, from no fault of their own. Has anyone got an answer for me to give these idiots when they tell me how "blessed" they are?

Then I proceed to let them no, that the I is the closest to any deity that I've yet encountered. If you feel some kind of way about the word, and it doesn't apply to you, then why bother?

What if instead of saying they're blessed they said instead they're grateful for what they have and the good fortune they've received?

It's my impression that many "believers in gods" take themselves as such. That is, their identity becomes so close to god-like as to be indistinguishable. "Us vs. them"... is a huge part of the attraction of religious affiliation. IMO this is a tremendous western influence, resulting in a decided trend/mentality in the west (vs. oriental cultures)... the damnation of individuals, need to "kiss up" to the trilogy.

I suppose if you accept that blessings can be bestowed by a deity, it makes more sense to consider yourself blessed than simply lucky.

And that's the horrific part of religion - people believe they have been singled out as "special" while others suffer for no reason. But of course the religiots believe that suffering, as the wicked mother theresa said, is "the way to heaven. Except she didn't. Suffer.
I'm not sure they always mean it the way you are taking it. I see it more as they are trying not to take the credit for their good fortune and so, instead, act as though it was only because their god saw fit to bestow this on them.
