Reducing the suffering of all beings.

There is no "atheist point of view", but rather, the viewpoint of individual atheists -- given that atheism is definitional, not organizational, and it's pretty much the opposite of dogma.

Atheists think all sorts of things about the meaning of life. Some are nihilists, some are not. I daresay most people who are nihilists (whether atheist or not) probably don't understand what nihilism even actually is, anyway. Atheists are all over the map politically despite tending to lean left, and that alone means there's no coherent position on The Meaning of Life.

Indeed, the very question suggests there's some ready-made bestowed purpose "out there" to discover when in fact if there's anything atheists TEND TO think about the matter, it's that meaning isn't extrinsic, but entirely intrinsic and therefore self-determined based on your own particular needs, desires, and knowledge. Meaning in life is whatever feels meaningful to you ... whatever evokes passion and dedication in you ... whatever floats your boat, to use the vernacular. And that is likely to change as you grow and mature and your needs and interests evolve.

So to me as an atheist the real question is how one goes about finding meaning and purpose for themselves at any given point.

I was going to reply to this post, but you already said it all, and said it better than I could have. Thank you.

Why does it have to have meaning?

It doesn't have to have meaning but you can make it more MEANINGFUL by acknowledging what/who is important to you, being honourable and living by your chosen values.
