"I regard the brain as a computer which will stop working when its components fail. There is no heaven or afterlife for broken down computers; that is a fairy story for people afraid of the dark." Stephen Hawking, Rest in peace.

The best part is it won't be dark. It will be nogness. Our minds cannot conceive of nothing as we are incapable of experiencing nog. It is beyond us in the mortal realm.

I go with the evidence. Professor Hawking was mistaken.

I wouldn’t say that he is mistaken at all. He is giving his opinion. . To call him a very intelligent man would be understating it. He earned his bachelor's degree in math and physics at Oxford University and his master's and PhD at Cambridge University. So when he makes the statement that the brain is a computer, a biological computer, he is correct. This is supported by a lots of evidence from experts in the field. There is also no evidence of any kind to support an afterlife or a heaven. So he is correct there as well. Furthermore he is also correct in that religion is a Fairy Story that people tell themselves because they are afraid of dying. That is why they invented a Heaven to tell themselves that they won’t really die they’ll just go to a “better place”. So then when you say that he is mistaken are you supporting the belief in an “after life”?

@LibrePenseur The evidence, of which Professor Hawking may have unaware, is quite persuasive. [med.virginia.edu]

I'm having the same trouble with my satnav at the moment. Don't know how I'm going to drive back to England....

You have a tongue, use it to ask directions. Your tongue does work, does it not ? Sheesh, talk about a Blonde

@VAL3941 - Yes I have a tongue, and I speak all the languages of the countries I'll be passing through (Italian, German, French), but as it's a 24 hour drive as it is, I'd rather let a satnav do the working out to take me to my overnight stops... and not change it into 48 hours of solid driving. Just me. (And by the way, the "blonde" comment doesn't endear me to you in any way - just so long as you know, and that demeaning you in my opinion was what you intended...)

@GoldenDoll
Wow ! We are touchy !

@VAL3941 No we're just a little more intelligent than you.

@GoldenDoll
Is that what the call it nowdays, didn't know you could spell the word, got help did you ?
