This was always my vision for being with someone but in my experience it's fairly unusual for people to share it and to be consistent with it.

I agree though with @Fanburger that it's not true that nothing we do in this life matters at all. It's just that the things that tend to wreck marriages are little things that truly don't matter.

I don't particularly believe that. I have a son. Hopefully he will find someone to have children with and carry on. In that capacity what I did mattered or he wouldn't be here. That he isn't a menace to society is at least in part because of me, so in that capacity what I did mattered.

How we treat others can affect how they decide to treat others. That matters. Even if my name is forgotten and the things I did or refused to do are never known... I know I affected others and I know those who carry on in my line are there because of me.

It isn't grand and earth shattering, but that doesn't mean none of us mattered. Even if there is no heaven and hell, no afterlife, the effects of our actions do reverberate throughout family and friendships. In the long run it does matter.
