Our energy never dies. I think we are here for the experience.

Gadzooks! Brains abound...quite the deep question, great question.
My take is that we are here, in a garden of Eden, and we can choose our purpose. You chose two very noble purposes! ... my purpose...purposes? Be good, be kind, never judge others...just love them, make people smile...happy, relieve suffering and discover the real purpose: parenting, and loving in a committed relationship, with one person.
...after I get settled, if we find an endearing friendship...I could see traveling your way, to meet up...
Breakfast, lunch or dinner...or have me become Perkins the butler - so I can cook you two a grilled chard meal! Cooking, is my favorite sport!
FYI: parenting, brings me the most joy...having a child is a huge plus...
Next joys are guitar, anything active outdoors...and dawns...
I have two daughters.

Respectfully yours,
Chard

I'm going to start saying gadzooks. I love it and had forgotten about it until I just read your comment. ????

I don’t think humans are designed. If they were, the designer seriously needs to take some engineering classes. I mean, was the knee REALLY the best available option? The rotator cuff? (OK, I’m biased. I did gymnastics and have had two shoulder surgeries and three knee surgeries).

But there is a great Zen meditation on fear for people who fear death and growing old. It is intended to force you to confront and become accustomed to your fear, so that it no longer has power over you:

I am of the nature to age, I have not gone beyond aging;
I am of the nature to sicken, I have not gone beyond sickness;
I am of the nature to die, I have not gone beyond dying;
All that is mine, beloved and pleasing, will become
otherwise, will become separated from me.

I think the answer to both would be yes, depending on what your definition of a purpose.Every person serves some kind of purpose, either beneficial or detrimental to others and society. I am not sure what my ultimate purpose in life is, but I know what I view my purpose to be and that is to be there for my friends and family. To be their support, their rock when needed, and to make them laugh when needed.

Neither. ..humans evolve.....change over time. ....diet habitat clothing and the sciences have increased longevity from mid 30's to vibrant 80's in 4 short centuries. ....aging reversal research is announcing cellular therapy break throughs. ...cryonics and stasis technology is storing fresh cadavers for future revival to life. ...do not go gentle into that good night, rage rage against the dying of the light and I add abate pollution that is carcinogenic making children sick and elders die early

Neither. We are not designed with a purpose, nor are we meant to do anything. The notion that we are meant to do anything is a religious idea that I would dispute.

Simply put, we evolved into an intelligent, reasoning life form with an instinctual desire to survive and thrive. Mean comes from within based on the life decisions you make. Otherwise, life is the short span between birth and the great dirt nap.

From the way you have phrased the question, I would say you believe that god(s) created/designed the universe and man and that was for some reason apparently only known to the creator. Even you would accept the fact that humans do grow old and die.

Un/Fortunately while I may like to believe the above, what I have seen causes me to believe the more scientific theories about the creation of the universe and humankind's evolution into the form we are today. And I also believe that we put the meaning into our lives. As you have put the meaning for life into yours. Certainly at the moment there are no alternatives to physically growing old and dying. My thoughts and values may live on in my friends and family surviving me. A hundred years or so from now, I will be very lucky to be remembered once in a while.

Without a designer, can there be a design?

We are currently the best at expending more energy than our surrounding for the longest duration of time. Oh, mostly by masturbating, so that's one possible purpose.

I believe we grow old and die

"Purpose" is a human concept created by thought processes and is subjective to the sentient entity who conjures the thought of "purpose".

I believe the same idea applies to the concept of "meant".

What is your source for the concepts of "purpose" and "meant"?
For me, it is my own thought processes that decide whether to assign "purpose" to something.
In many cases I do not think there is a purpose or that something is meant to be.
In many cases, things just "are". Or said another way: "Things are they way they are".

I believe there needs to be a "thought" to create a purpose.
A person can do something with purpose and that purpose relies upon that persons thoughts and motivations.
Humans and the universe and reality were not created by a sentient being who has thoughts.
They just are they way they are through the passage of time.
We can change they way they will be in the future but we cannot change the past.
We can give "purpose" to they way they will be by interacting with them.
We can make choices to give purpose to how humans are designed.
We can change humans so they either are or are not "meant" to grow old and die.

We must find our purpose and try to make that a reality. In my humble opinion.

We don't have any alternative.

@cuteberry890 of course we must. It’s the hardest most fun part of life. To figure out a purpose for yourself in humanity and what you can do to drive it in a great direction. Wouldn’t you agree?

Humans are nurturing and nurture....this is the only guidance that Springs from families and we humans can access collective wisdom as we see fit....evil are the violent the criminal the theocratic that force upon some of us error and irrationality if not rape and trauma
