"Tall dark and handsomely rich"
I am not.
My usual tag line on dating sites reads, "Fit happy girl sought by fat hippy guy". Doesn't get any takers,
I have pretended in the past, had my weight under control, been extremely fit, had flash cars and dressed the part. Had no trouble at all dating and finding ladies who wanted a relationship. Two problems, none of them matched what I was looking for and also, they were still not interested in the real "me". I am not concerned so much with a lady's appearance, dress style wealth but the quality of their thinking and their values are of utmost importance. I have other reasons for currently shedding some 60kg (132 pounds) of surplus, not health related, not dating related. Now I am concerned I will again be dating but the wrong women. There is something fundamentally flawed in my understanding of people and relationships, at almost 60 I still don't get it.

Dude, I'm 68 and not even close to getting it; don't feel bad. I have 0 idea what any potential partner might want that I have at my age and current circumstances. I've tried the online dating thing-nope, nothing-and every time I go somewhere and notice someone who would interest me, they either are too young (my assumption), or too old, have a ring on, or someone (partner, presumably) comes up to join them.

When I was working, and out amongst people, it was fairly easy to get acquainted with potential partners, or at least dating prospects; alone, in a new, unfamiliar community, and in a social milieu in which it is very hard to grasp social norms regarding relationship formation, I'm at a complete loss.

My sister, after hosting me for a few months at her home, called me "unobservant" and "obsequious." And she seemed to be angry and frustrated at me. Of course, she didn't bother to explain what, exactly, she meant by that, or why she came to that conclusion; further adding to my consternation. I know what those terms mean, but not what she meant by using them.

It sometimes seems as though society went off in a completely different direction when I wasn't looking.

Focusing on weight, anybody's weight, is a downer & makes everybody self-conscious! Start focusing on making someone happy!

humans with an advanced emotional intelligence & perception of their immediate environment are most probably not supposed to share a home. sharing moments of joy & drama & lust & peace, yes, but not a permanent joint abode.

Yes !

Agree totally re not living together, that seriously doesn't work for me. Some relationships have been great until then.
