"Unlike other inscrutable problems, such as the structure of the atom, the molecular basis of replication and the causes of human violence, which have witnessed stunning advancements of enlightenment, these three seem to recede ever further away from understanding, even as we race ever faster to catch them in our scientific nets."

As for the causes of human violence...

Inequality and suffering caused by capitalism prompts some to look for scapegoats. Deprivation and limited resources elicits fear and anger - the immigrants are taking our jobs etc..

The ruling class deliberately stokes this anger age fear for divide and rule and engages in wars to serve their imperialist goals and to support and justify the arms industry. (Lockheed Martin shares rose after military strikes in Syria.)

There is in war.

Great article! Thanks. I didn’t expect to read that from the publisher of “Skeptic”, but it confirms my opinions about certain things, and augments my state of bewilderment.
