We have a similar problem with our elected representatives in the U.S. In the U.S. the problem stems from how political campaigns are funded. The rich can contribute the most to campaigns, so they contribute to other rich people. That is an over simplification, but is still generally true.

Themselves and their fellow milloinaires. We all know that politics attracts a disproportionate number of egotists and opportunists....the majority of M.P.s don’t give a stuff about us, they are just there to feather their own nests and those of their chums.
