My question has two parts:

  1. Is it ethical for gofundme accounts to ask for donations to cover funeral expenses, when cremation costs a great deal less? I know this sounds hard-hearted of me, but I ask because I live in a part of the country where there is a relatively high level of gun violence. Innocent people are killed on a regular basis and there are many different types of requests made by victims' families, often asking for $6,000 - $7,000 to cover funeral expenses. It seems wasteful to me when I know that cremation costs half that amount, or less.
  2. Do I have the right to refuse to contribute to such a request when I am pretty sure that the reason for the amount requested is that the people planning the funeral have been told by their church representative that the victim must be buried, and cremation is often not even mentioned as an option.

Yes, I know I am being a grinch; maybe it's my way of making the holidays last a little longer.

Hi Zelia,

I agree that 6-7000 for a funeral burying is hilarious, but as fanatic patriotism and fanatic religious, fanatic sentimentalism and irrational emotions are part of a culture that is based on consumerism. Why death would be an exception?

First, I am growing weary of every sad, difficult of tragic even happening in our country triggering a GoFundMe.

That said, I agree with you. Unless there is a really really good and valid solid reason a person cannot be cremated, if the family doesn't have burial costs, I think cremation should be given priority consideration.

And, I would not feel like a grinch or stingy or hard-hearted. Each of us is free to donate to any charitable cause we choose -- or not. Without divulging your choice or feeling guilty.

I'm a middle school teacher in the "inner city," and in the past few months I've been to final services for two former students -- one a drug overdose, on his 22nd birthday, the other a murder victim at the age of 19. VERY religious families, VERY costly and elaborate funeral and burial services. I donated to both GoFundMe accounts, not for one second would I question what they intend to do with the money based on THEIR religious beliefs -- I 100% support their right to practice their religious freedom, and whether the services were a financial hardship or not they needed help and I gave it of my own free will.

Burial is a fairly recent practice that is a disgusting, useless tradition that should be abolished. For centuries virtually every culture burned the remains and/or set them out to sea

Sometimes people believe they have insurance and pay for the funeral to find out their term policy expired. Just saying, some people have things like that happen. I know because the government did that to me. I retired because my wife was sick and when she passed away, they told me I canceled her life insurance when I retired. No way I am that stupid. Still waiting for records from archives before I can even fight them.

That sucks. 😟

I can't imagine how asking for money is unethical. It's just a question.

Do you have the right to refuse? Is someone holding a gun to your head?

  1. I think it's fine to ask for anything in a gofundme request as long as you're honest. Nobody is forced donate.
  2. I think you have the right to refuse any request for any reason or no reason.

You have the right to refuse for any reason.
