I do find history to be very fascinating. I particularly enjoy ancient history and how civilizations began. Their belief structure seems to be pretty consistent and they each borrowed from each other. Very fascinating indeed.

I am also very fascinated with religion. Here is the best representation of the evolution of religion there is. [the40foundation.org] but I have not read many new books or watched shows with many new interesting religion. Aside from izombie and the new zombie religion lol.

But for old ones, Dune, Battlestar Galactica (remake), Stranger in a Strange Land and of course all the classics bible etc.

Have you ever read Kurt Vonnegut's Cat's Cradle? He depicts an awesome fictitious religion there. Bokononism (/ˈboʊkoʊnɒnˌɪzəm/) is a fictitious religion invented by Kurt Vonnegut and practiced by many of the characters in his novel Cat's Cradle. Many of the sacred texts of Bokononism were written in the form of calypsos. Bokononism is based on the concept of foma, which are defined as harmless untruths.

That would have been my suggestion. Wampeters, foma, and granfalloons.

All the time. The Belgariad by David Eddings had a pantheon of gods that had divided the world amongst themselves.

Outside of books, I encounter fictional religions in games a lot. Of which my favorite is the chaos gods in Warhammer 40k.

I do too - religion, and why people believe in what they do, is fascinating.
