Without knowledge, the vision of truth cannot be obtained. ~ Socrates
Plato thought that the things of the world we experience are like shadows on a cave's wall, poorly representing the truth. It is all we can experience until we become aware of our chains which bind us to the phenomenological world. Knowledge for him is within us and and breaking these chains means being able to see the light of day within us. The truth will set you free Plato style.
His idea is epic but I don't believe it works this way.
Different time period, and Plato's teaching were more for a class of peoples than all peoples.
