Down the path to complete insanity I would say!

I've never seen one go rational. You should have recorded that. That would be like filming Big Foot.

Maajid Nawaz would be a good example.

Oh, it happens. It happened to me. There are plenty of deconverts here. It's just hard to capture one in the wild because the actual event is usually private, initially, and testified to later.

But I have seen a couple of examples, on other discussion sites. People who were rabid fundamentalists if you look at their posts from years prior, and are now atheists. But yes, they are rare. I can count the ones I've seen where there's an actual evidential trail, on one hand.

I think what a lot of doubters do is lurk in places like this and then eventually they join us an testify to their deconversion -- usually it is not solely because of one site or one person's argument, it is an accumulation of things.

This is one of the reasons I post here and elsewhere; following the general rule that there are as many as 99 lurkers for every active poster, I think a lot of those lurkers are doubters who are quietly processing evidence and considering their options.

@mordant Interesting. The only person l have known personally to convert was my brothers wife, a Catholic when they met. She converted slowly partly from being around us. But she probably would have gotten there on her own eventually.

@Sticks48 Yup, kind of illustrates my point, she deconverted quietly and gradually, and offline. I think that's the way of it, usually. Not some anti-Damascus-road plotline where someone says, in the middle of a debate with an atheist, "I've seen the light (darkness?) and you're right, it's all bullshit. I'm leaving church immediately".

@mordant it's a slow process, indeed. I like Peter Boghossian's approach to "de-conversion" called street epistemology. See: A Manual for Creating Atheists
