I thought this a clever presentation on the rationale of atheism; one I'd not heard put precisely this way before:
I doubt that very many religious people's lives are as devoid of fun, adventure, and fulfillment as this video would have us believe. Even if Christians did avoid "sin" (which they don't),
there would still be lots of Christians who live more exciting lives than many non believers do. Some good ideas in this video...just a little over reach though.
I agree. That thought occurred to me also.
I don't know how many atheists actually think this way. Many of us still have ego invested in abreacting to unsatisfying or outright abusive experiences in religion that we have discarded. However ... those who have a sufficiently considered position of atheism would not disagree with this, and I certainly don't. Meaning comes from valuing and fully experiencing the life that we actually have, not fantasizing about some promised idealized life that allegedly comes later.
That video expresses my point of view very well. It so happens that I've had that exact conversation with a Hospice volunteer in a situation where neither of us was free to fully express ourselves. We were waiting for my father to awake one morning and given the circumstances we weren't going to criticize each other.
I do hope I gave him something to think about, though.
