Shit like THIS is exactly why I say #fuckReligion
[bbc.com]
I was raised in western Pennsylvania and worked for the diocese in the early 80s. Even at that time I was aware of abuse (not sexual) taking place in the church, and it was surreal to scan the list to find if I knew any of the priests in this case. The extent of the abuse doesn't surprise me as much as the way the membership doesn't challenge the hierarchy. It's so disturbing.
I hope you reported what you saw.
@ReadyforaChange It was verbal abuse, not sexual, and I was a 17-year old girl who was overwhelmed with it. It's taken this long - and the church's own records - to get sexual abuse into the light. Getting verbal abuse addressed would have been even harder so ... no.
tip of the iceberg one suspects, but no great surprise, if religion teaches anything its "don't do what i do, but do what i say"
