My daughter lives in LA...goes to USC...in the film school SCA... animation and screenwriting...when she was little she would paint a background, disassemble Barbie's and GI Joe's and other action figures (legs, arms, torsos, heads)... reassemble them with arms from this one on that one's torso, miscellaneous heads swapped, etc...paint them...put them in the scene she created and then shoot photos, videos and stop-motion films.
Did you do anything like that growing up?
