Sweetheart tree. While hiking on Fort Boreman Hill above Parkersburg yesterday, we discovered this little gem.

I actually find this image painful. It makes me sad for the tree. Seriously.

@ProudMary you don't own any trees. They own themselves.

@ProudMary I am glad you have a healthy forest of trees. I planted a few hundred years ago but that is a different story. In this part of the world (North Dakota) I have seen a few stressed trees with similar carvings fall prey to insects and die within a few seasons in greater ratios then surrounding trees that were not damaged.

@ProudMary Environment makes a difference. The Dakota's make up a very different world for the few trees that manage to survive.

@ProudMary I disagree. There are beautiful trees on the land I pay taxes on too. I don't own them anymore than I own the earth they grow in. I am here for a while then I will be gone. I matter not.
