Do you think that living in a foreign country for a long period of time changes people? Two very conservative friends of mine lived overseas for a long period of time and it changed them. After living in the UK for a year, one friend became a doula after her first child. She shunned the US trend to have C-sections in most pregnancies and lack of care for pregnant women compared to NHS and their system. Obviously not my topic of interest, but I'm listening to what you have to say. on US pregnancy experiences. To make a long story short, they came back to Colorado Springs after their contract in the UK was over, and they couldn't wait to get out of there and he got new work in Germany.

The other ex-conservative lives in Saudi Arabia and after several years there is considering retiring either there or Cairo, or Costa Rica. She likes having her own drivers and servants. Says she feel safe b/c the beheadings shut down all of the crime,

Another conservative friend of mine just travels a lot and hasn't lived in these countries. She is still a Trump supporter.

What do you think? Does seeing the world make you more open to other cultures and less conservative?

The U.S. is NOT near the top in child and mother mortality rates, mostly due to the treatment (prejudice) of black mothers and their children - seriously, google it. The U.S. doctors push for C-sections more than any where else in the world. Their time is that important PLUS many women push for it though currently (sort of a new trend) some doctors are pushing back in favor of vaginal birth.

The Saudi thing was an eye opener. I guess she just does not require alot of the freedoms we have in America. She is exactly the type who likes an authoritarian (dictator/king) governing. I don't live in fear and that to me explains much, fear motives many.

I think one has to be open minded, if you are fearful you may not be as open minded. I only catch snippets of talk radio and it is ALL about fear. They praise the job trump and the gop is doing (ditto with Bush) and trash everyone else with gloom and doom.

Who we are at our cord determines how we'll be out in the world.

Actually, my friend is a mercenary making bank. Nobody would pay her more or give her more benefits than the deal she has there. She hated driving, but women got those rights back in June. It's pretty much the US on her base. She understands that the penalty is death for drinking or drugs off of base. She was as pro no universal healthcare as it gets before going. Bow she is more about universal health care. It's complicated...

It did for me . I was a conservative back in the early 80s . Once you travel and see the world and other cultures it allows you to have an informed opinion. I have spent quite a bit of time in sweden and the Americanconservative mis characterization of sweden is amazing. Yes they do have slightly higher taxes, but everyone has access to health care , college tuition is just like high school. Free. Every one who works has six weeks paid taxes. They tend to spend much less on things ... possessions and very few own the huge 3000 plus sqft houses we have. But they travel and live so much more than we do in the usa .
