An easy way to tell if you should use "its" or "it's":

If you replace it with "it is" and it makes sense, then use "it's". If it doesn't, use "its".

  1. It's cold outside.
    It is cold outside.

OMG yes!

  1. Blue is it's original color.
    Blue is it is original color.

Hell, no!

I pride myself on having good grammar, but I catch myself often putting an apostrophe in "its" when it's possessive, so I have to check myself with this "it is" tip often. 😉
