A recent reading the other day of a mention of female thought police in another post was soon followed by my reading a supposed Jewish proverb that equally may be Catholic, Protestant, Muslim, Buddhist or Hindu.

The proverb went something like:

"Who needs god when you have mothers".

Now I know that a number of members are Jewish however as in real life they form a small albeit frequently vociferous minority. The majority of members here were not inculcated in youth and childhood with such philosophy or belief and the majority of members on site are atheist or agnostic.

Therefore does the majority wish to be exposed to such a dangerous concept as "Who needs god when you have mothers"?

My baby sister is a new grandmother, and I've just bought her a pillow that says: "Who needs Santa when you have Nana?"

My own mother really, really wanted me to have god. But like many, perhaps most, she did the best she could with what she had. We eventually came to closure and I am very grateful for that. Wish I could give that comfort to all my friends here.

My mother was an exception and I would have liked someone else..

Sadly we don't get that choice. But as a marriage counsellor said to me "even bad parents are good in that they teach their children what not to do with the grandchildren!"

@FrayedBear As long as they do not adopt her ways.

@Marine correct.

Nobody needs my mother. She was an objectively terrible person.

You use the past tense because she is dead or simply treated as dead by you? I have a friend whose mother had him put in a mental institution at the age of 3 because he wanted to learn to read. He was there most of his childhood and consequently got little schooling. His mother was also Munchausen by proxy and so had all sorts of procedures done to him. As a result of one procedure no one can call him an arsehole any longer coz he hasn't got one any more.
So what is your mother's claim to fame? Did your spell checker change abjectly into objectively for you?

@FrayedBear 'was' because she is, indeed, dead, as of 2013.

She was an abusive narcissist. I use 'objectively' because, no matter which way you slice it, her behaviour and mentality were that of a horrible person. One could look at it with no emotional subtext and realise that.

Though, now I think on it, 'abjectly' would work just as well.

@memorylikeasieve hence why I queried. I have the misfortune to be acquainted to a narcissist who I suspect is actually psychopathic. The cost of getting out from such people can be great. Sounds like you have now had five unoppressed years now... Sounds good.

@FrayedBear it is good. My stress level has dropped enormously. ?

There are many good, funny and cause for pause Jewish comments, jokes and philosophical nuggets. Catskills resorts - aka the borstbelt thrived on Jewish jokes. Seinfeld ran for years on TV.
Pretty much anything and everyone is open game. Hateful and personal attacks NO. Let everyone judge for themselves.

Thank you. Following your comment, I have slightly modified the introduction.

as i have neither one nor the other - with the former never having been an option - & am still hanging on despite many dangerouser concepts doing the rounds, i don't see a problem.

Please expand those thoughts so my simple mind can understand.

@FrayedBear, i have no "god", never did. i have no mother - any more. there are far worse "ideas" making the rounds, some of them actually in real life (gasp!); i block unwelcome nonsense-spouters, give the silent treatment to bullies & keep surviving all that shit just fine ?

@walklightly I will PM you.
