Everyone has those major moments in their life where they stop and look at everything around them. For me, that's today.
For on October 6th 2010, I almost died.

Heading to work at 0530, notice at the on ramp to the Expressway there were small animals running from one side to another. Migration season. So, I went slower than normal, which is one of the things that saved me coming around that blind turn in the dark.

Two deer crossing the highway. Honk, flip lights, pump breaks, nothing. As I'm hitting the break to hold, everything is going slow motion. I reached down and pulled the handle and pushed with my legs, letting the seat back as far as it would go. Then a solid crunch.

Once I knew I stopped and was ok, I heard a search of tires, and assumed someone was about to hit me from behind. But it was thankfully in the other lane, clipping the 2nd deer who was apparently returning to check on its friend.

My car.. that I'd had just shy over 3 years, and had payed off just 8 weeks before, took the hit for me. I walked away without any injuries. 4 days before my wedding. Even though that ultimately didnt work out, I'm still glad I was alive to do it.

So yes, I support the creation of overpasses for wildlife. I didnt even know that was a thing until two years ago. Sounds brilliant. Why is the U.S. just now starting to do this?

How big were the deer?

Cop and tow driver both said it look about 2 years old. Had I any knowledge of where to send it, it would have been in my freezer.

Still trying to get out and hunt to get revenge.

Pretty densely muscled,like hitting a tree. Some cities have culverts just for wlld life,instead of overpasses.

@Mike1947
This just happened to be a perfect mix.
Around a turn so they could cross sort of in secret. Coming from a grove of trees not fenced in, and the turn in the expressway had an emergency Uturn section right there.. I'm guessing it's a favorite crossing point.

@Angus If it were me,get your State,DOT or local Govt.to erect a fence/barrier,some will be killed as you almost were.

@Angus Deer that are killed like that, in an emotional state, don't taste great. You're probably better off. it might have put you off of venison forever.

@ladyprof70
Didnt know that, know body ever said.
Finally got someone willing to show me some hunting stuff. Instead of blindly going at it myself.

I can read a lot of stuff online, but theres no real substitute for a good teacher.

@Angus Find an experienced hunter. We/they generally love to share. You want to sneak up on the deer and take them out with a single shot. That way they are dead before they hit the ground.(Before you hunt be sure of your marksman skills. Don't hunt if you're unsure or inaccurate.) If you choose to hunt with a bow and arrow, know that the way they die is through bleeding to death. I have always considered that less humane.

@ladyprof70
Great advice.
That's why it's taken me so long to go do it. All the MAGAs that I work with complain about kids not understanding why hunting is necessary, but they don't want to teach.

Youd think in Indiana it would be easier to find a mentor, but everyones so secretive about their spots. I also think its becuase they arent as good a hunters as they claim and don't want anyone knowing.

I've not practiced with the shotgun as much as the handgun, so I do need to fix that.

@Angus Check your state laws. It's illegal to use a shotgun for deer in Wisconsin. You can only use rifles. Get a copy of your state regs and read it carefully.

@ladyprof70
Indiana always 12 gauge. They just last year got more strict with rifle cartridges. Everyone was selling their 556s to get 762s.
