We should be responsible and live a debt-free life. Or so I have always thought and lived by, because if you don’t owe anything to people there will be no reason for them to create bad feelings. But does it really matter? Should we take these things so seriously?

Is it even possible for today’s youngsters to do so? When I was going to university you could still come out of education free of debt, even if you weren’t from a wealthy background. Today it sounds like you need to take on many thousands of dollars of debt.

It seems like, in to-day's economy, you have to be in some kind of debt. I don't have a credit card. I never wanted one. Now I can't do half the shit I need to do because, silly me, I decided to only buy what I can afford. ?

To set up that US student loan program was a dire mistake IMO. The program has caused costs to skyrocket. Just as with medical insurance, the money is there for the getting and greedy administrators act accordingly. Many young victims have been caught up in the scheme. I don’t know the answer. Could the loans just be forgiven? Refinanced?

I feel so lucky and grateful that my father was able to pay my way. How is it done in the Netherlands?

We have a student loans program too, I think if you can’t repay it it is eventually forgiven. But uni fees are also a lot higher now than they were in the past.

I see nothing wrong with sensible debt.

To me sensible debt is secured debt loaned at a reasonable interest rate, and the means of repayment are definite, such as in business loans.

Many young college graduates of today start out under heavy debts with high interest rates, and there is no certainty that they will be able to repay their loans.
