It is said this is the land (U.S. of A.) of opportunity. If so, why wouldn't you take advantage of them?

As in,

What would you be willing to do if I gave you an opportunity for a free house?

I would eat a bag of babies for a free house.

But would you meet me every morning at 7 on the job site and work until 5 for a couple weeks? Believe it or not there are many people that claim they are poor, homeless, needing a place to live real bad won't even do that.

@Anonbene For a free house? Hell yeah! I'm not travelling to VA though lol What's the catch?

@Piece2YourPuzzle
Ok, so you wouldn't be willing to relocate to get something that's on average worth a couple hundred thousand dollars you could immediately sell then go to a more preferable market later. How far would you consider living away from where you are right now? Say we couldn't find affordable land in your immediate area?
BTW
Houses are available everywhere. I would come to your state.

@Anonbene You didn't answer my question.

@Piece2YourPuzzle yes I did. "would you meet me every morning at 7 on the job site and work until 5 for a couple weeks"

@Anonbene Ok, so I will meet you at a NY location, but I want you to sign a contract stating if I do meet you every morning at 7am on the job site and work until 5pm that day for a couple of weeks that I get a free house from you at no cost to me. I want it to be a fully functional house with electricity and I want it to meet city code to the T. If I don't meet those requirements stipulated here then I want sufficient market pay for my work at no penalty to me. Now let's discuss how big the house will be. That will be in the contract too.

@Piece2YourPuzzle
If there were a string of words that someone could say that would make sure I would never help them those would be them. You should have scrolled down before posting that.

@Anonbene So you don't want a contract to make sure you do what you say you want to do in business? Ok, got it.

The problem is, a house is never really free - unless you are including the cost of property taxes, utilities, and maintenance.

You would be paying those costs no matter where you lived which are minor compared to what the actual building costs.

If you were giving away a free house, I'd be looking for the fine print.

You and your friends provide the labor to do to houses what Ikea does with bookshelves.
Gut and panelize, then set it back up with instruction.

@Anonbene Ikea-like construction, that would definitely classify as fine print.

@mt49er
No not Ikea like construction. Ikea like process. Panelize an existing house to be able to move it a long distance without any trouble. Maybe this will help. A shop I moved for a friend last year.

@Anonbene I've always considered Ikea to be garbage furniture where you'll take a few cheap pieces of re-enforced cardboard and a few screws previously installed in the cardboard with some plastic caps to conceal the identity. That looks more like work, but will likely last longer than anything purchased from Ikea.

I wouldn't be "willing" to do anything. I'd want to know what you wanted in exchange for an opportunity for a free house. Only then could I decide what I might be willing to do.
I find it interesting how you choose to parse your words.

Not even some carpentry? I'm surprised when I offer houses and all the value and security they bring people still don't take advantage of the opportunity. I get nothing, it actually costs me to help people.

@Anonbene You're assuming I wouldn't do any carpentry. I didn't say that's something I wouldn't be willing to do. I would want to know what you expected BEFORE I would agree to anything. I wouldn't agree to anything without knowing your expectations first. It's commendable that you want to help people. However, just from the limited interaction we've had on this site, I suspect your approach might be somewhat off-putting to people. That could be why you aren't getting the response from people that you seem to expect. Just an observation.

@KKGator
I said, what would you be willing to do for a free house. You assumed something and responded as if my implication was what you imagined which had nothing to do with what I was thinking.
a Im not assuming anything. You did say you wouldn't be willing to do anything but now you say you might. Maybe what's confusing you is the choice I gave you with the word willing.

I just told you, I get nothing. It costs me to help you.

b. Im the person helping people and I do not suffer fools gladly.

@Anonbene You obviously didn't read past the first sentence of my initial response. I wasn't "assuming" anything. I just wouldn't agree to anything without knowing your expectations beforehand. I hadn't "imagined" anything, and I'm not remotely confused. I don't suffer fools gladly either. Or people who don't clearly express what they mean. Like I said, it's commendable that you are trying to help people. I wasn't questioning the cost to you, yet you felt it necessary to bring it up. That also indicated that you are expecting something for your efforts. Whether it's gratitude, or recognition, I have no idea, but you are still expecting something.

@KKGator
Wrong again. You assumed i was going to ask you for something to give me. Only your labor to work on your house which I do not benefit from.
Even in your last sentence you insist it again. I am not expecting nor do i accept anything from people i help in return for helping them.
But I want to thank you for proving the point of my post. You just can't help some people because they already know it all.
