Is Satanism, as a distinctive religious movement, actually more of an atheistic "unreligion", so to speak? I'm leaning towards yes, due solely to the fact that it is an epicurean philosophy with ritual and drama thrown into the mix. Anton Lavey was a master showman, and honestly kind of a charlatan, but he knew people and psychology we'll enough to know that in order to found an atheistic movement as a direct counterpart to the abrahamic religions, ritual and pageantry was helpful if not absolutely necessary. I'm aware that the American church of satan is a moneymaker, as religions tend to be. But as far as Alistair Crowley and the British satanic temple is concerned, I am ignorant of it. Anyway, is laveyan Satanism and atheistic movement? And for those of you familiar, what is Crowley' s satanism?

I've recently become somewhat interested in the Church of Satan. The nearest actual "church" is about 300 miles away and I haven't devoted myself to it enough to make the journey.
From what I've read, it is actually an atheist group, not religious at all. I like the 9 laws of Satanism". Make sense.
Here's where I have my reservations-
-$300 membership fee. Best way to run me off is to ask for money straight up.
-Reference to "magic" throughout the basic explanations of the beliefs or fundamentals or whatever. I might not understand what they are referring to (I'm almost certain I don't) but combined with my 3rd concern, the word just puts me off
-The pictures on the website show entire audiences/events/gatherings of members dressed like goofballs. Grown people looking like I did in the 10th grade when I thought I was Marilyn Manson's soulmate. It seems far too theatrical and like "shock statement" attention seeking behavior from a bunch of kinda odd grownups still struggling with teen angst issues.
And they do magic, I guess...

Satanism is honest, though still a religion. I like the "thou art that" focus (embodiment of God because thou art God). Satanic temples are circle jerks. It is a religion for the individual only.
