I am 😠 bloody pissed.
The other day I visited our local library. On the way out I checked the free magazine rack and found a copy of “Philadelphia Trumpet”! (https://www.thetrumpet.com/) Scanning through this periodical I saw articles like “How the wrangling over the Holy City hastens Bible prophecy”, “The deadly climate change deception” and other scatological screeds. Of course everything was backed up by some sort of “facts of prophesy”.

The big problem is that the magazine had a Lopez library address on the back and when I checked the periodical section, sure enough, there were other issues with a hand written label. Some may say this has become common, so what’s the big deal. It is NOT common here and IS a big deal. The magazine is published by the Philadelphia church of god and I was shocked that our library would subscribe to something like this. We are not in the bible belt and this sort of thing is simply not done here. Luckily, our librarian is an intelligent woman (she can’t help it that her last name is Pray) who is responsible for our 5 star rating. When we talked she told me she had contacted the magazine and was told it was a free publication and sent out to numerous libraries. The staff (volunteers) don’t know which is legit or not and simply put them (there were several) on a shelf and made a sign. The Librarian feels the same as us about religion (she told me about this link: [en.wikipedia.org]. She removed the magazines and will have a talk to the staff. The issue on the rack was out of place and I was, jokingly, told that Satan put the copy there and sent me to find it!

My point is that our country will have more and more of these stealth maneuvers to get their sick message across. Recently 4 sequential copies of my FFRF were not delivered to my mailbox (which I missed for various reasons). I complained and, magically a copy appeared. All it takes is one fanatic to worm their weasly (sorry weasels) way into our system and screw everything up. We all must be vigilant all the time.

Thank you Victoria for adding another dimension to this. This is an example of how one can make a negative thing motivate non-violent concrete action. Right now there is a war of words and politics and we need to do all we can to keep it that way.

I have contacted FFRF and the admin of the site with a suggestion of donating some FFRF memberships. There is support but some fine details to work out.

I thought the mail thing is a federal crime. I live in a very red town and if my mags didn't arrive I would have a fit. I've never had a problem in that regard. I asked my wife what she would do about the magazines as she is the local library manager. She said it would never get through the book work for one of her staff to order a religious magazine. If someone wants to donate she has them put the magazines on a free table in the foyer and if they remain until the end of the month then they go in the garbage and she tells that to the person wanting to put them there. I have seen religious stuff on that table a time or two so I grab it for fire starter material. If religious magazines were sent unrequested they would go in the trash.

It is a felony and the rules are posted in the Post Office. Again, it only takes one fanatic to try and change things (remember the person who wouldn't issue marriage licenses?) Sometimes I think these people they are heroes standing up to an unjust rule. It was beyond stupid because nothing else was missing from my mail box (it would be nice if they felt the same way about junk mail). I have been receiving the newsletter regularly for 6 years then, all of a sudden 4 copies missing.
I actually had a plan. If the person were found I was going to be willing to not press charges if they had agreed to become a member of FFRF and the Humanist, read all the material and send me a monthly report. However, all the mail handlers in the PO it is hard to pin it on one person.
I do exactly the same with magazines I find in the free section (how I found this one). But I pick out the religious and gun mags. They go into recycling.

Totally forgot about the rest of the post as the post not arriving verved me off. The Philadelphia church of god has some very strange ideas/beliefs. There is a man here in the complex that will tell you all about the church if you give him a chance. I avoid and discusssion with the nut job.

It is against the law to fuck with the mail delivery!!!

REALLY!
I was in Madison and picked up the Sept. issue and didn't notice the missing Aug. issue. This site got me so busy I wasn't paying attention to Nov. and Dec. but when I realized what happened (or didn't happen) I went to the PO and filed a verbal complaint in front of a lot of patrons. The Dec. issue showed up a few days later. I contacted FFRF and they sent me the date the issue was sent and it took almost 2 weeks to arrive? I was waiting to go higher but the Jan. issue came.
Are you a member?

@JackPedigo No but i use to work in the post office in South Cle Elum.

@silverotter11 Would you like to be a member of FFRF? I am asking because I have contacted this group and am willing to offer memberships, at my expense, to those on this site. FFRF is amenable and working on trying to reduce the charge in order to increase my offer. Some fine details need to be worked out (like keeping addresses private) and I will ask this of a few 'special' members ahead of time.

We really need to counter the misinformation and pure lies and the best way is with information and FFRF is on the forefront of fighting (and winning) the battle of keeping church and state separate! Plus it is often a fun group and read. Their conventions are a blast.
