What is the definition of Art, and what is the definition of Entertainment? How does one separate and identify each one?
I think they are different things to different people. But art is the various project created whether it be entertaining or not to others is up for interpretation by the viewer. I know i have a thing I do with art and craft. I often consider myself more crafty rather than an artist. Whereas my daughter is an artist. But i think poeple have been entertained by both. I guess it is all just rhetoric when it comes down to it.
Art and entertainment can be the same thing, but not always of course. A velvet painting of Elvis will certainly entertain me by making me laugh, but it is not art. LOL
And the very act of creating that velvet painting of Elvis is art because the activity of creation is more important to many artists than the results. (Back to the eye of the beholder thing.)
Of course. That doesn't mean anyone else has to like it and I certainly have the prerogative to laugh at it if I choose.
Art is something that the creator makes for their own satisfaction, Entertainment is produced purely for the enjoyment of the audience. There can be a crossover, with art being entertaining.
Don't you feel that the artist maintains sole possession of their work - as well as any and all interpretations of it's quality and meaning, if they keep it to themselves, but once they release it, it's like a triangle as the person or persons exposed to it can impose their own thoughts and feelings, as well as it's meaning, which then comes back to the artist as criticism?
That is a very good assessment of what happens. although depending on the medium the feedback can be far enough removed in both time and space as to be not even registerable, let alone criticism.
Art is an expression of an interpretation of something in life. While art can be entertaining it's primary purpose is to make some kind of statement. Whereas entertainment is simply that which is put forth for the amusement of others which can also make a statement.
