How many of you also visit churches when traveling? I am not interested in normal boring churches. I love visiting magnificent cathedrals or basilicas, also smaller churches that have something special about them. I admire the architecture, art and history of the place. What draws you in and what are some of your favourites?
The construction is legacy of human culture, history, will and sacrifice through sweet, blood and many times forced labor. Let it be a recognition for the ones used and/or abused to build them. I couldn't care less about the religion those construction may "represent".
I have visited Westminster Abbey, Bath Abbey, Notre Dame in Paris and many lesser ones ... I appreciate the architecture and the artistry. I also enjoyed visiting a former Catholic church that has been converted into something much more useful: a public library (Quebec City).
I attended an evensong service at Westminster Abbey and was impressed with its simplicity. All they did was have a boy's choir sing and read scripture. No commentary. It was effective in that space. Less is more.
I love visiting cathedrals. I haven't been struck by lightning, not even once.
I was never interested in cathedrals growing up, all I ever saw were small town churches. While in the Army in Germany we toured the Dom in Fulda, maybe it was the age of it or the architecture or the sculpture, whatever it was I fell in love with those old buildings. I saw quite a few of them while I was in Europe and miss the chance to ever do it again.
In New York, we have Saint Patrick's Cathedral and when I visited Berlin I made sure to visit the Berliner Dom. I love the stained glass windows, the sculptures and the spacious feel.
