So I am visiting my parents and they know I’m in recovery and she starts grilling me about my higher power. Since I’m a “non believer” how does that work for me? I try to explain to her that even a door knob can be my higher power but she’s becoming very self righteous and belligerent and I find myself becoming so frustrated. Then we move on to politics and how wonderful Trump is, this is going to be a long weekend. I just needed to vent, thanks!

It's hard to recover from anything emotional around religious people . My whole family is religious also . You could be better off by yourself . Try looking forward to "Me Time", & it's virtues 😉

In the south we say " Bless her heart ", In the book "Alcoholics Anonymous" AKA The Big Book, pg131-132 "Alcoholics who have derided religious people will be helped by such contact. Being possessed of a spiritual experience, the alcoholic will find he has much in common with these people, though he may differ with them on many matters. If he does not argue about religion, he will make new friends and is sure to find new avenues of usefulness and pleasure......."
None of your business what she believes, its your conception, personal and effective for you and you alone. The "Door knob" idea upsets those who are wedded to an idea about god, and that is not genuinely useful. The idea that god could be anything aka light bulb/ door knob ( opening up your mind) tends to be useful but is often used erroneously. Try letting her know that you are in the search for a power greater than yourself, that can solve all of your problems. This is the idea expressed in the chapter "We Agnostics" and is developed in step 2. You getting defensive and butt hurt about god is not going to do anyone any good.
