Just venting...

But, I don't care for Trump and my family and I were talking about politics. We all tend to agree on Trump. I just happened to say "The person I dislike more than Trump is Pence. He is such a religious nut. And Trump is kind of stupid, but he is also pretty smart to have chosen Pence. Because he knows if anyone tries to impeach him, they have to impeach Pence too. Because otherwise we would have a "The Handmaids Tale" situation on our hands.
My mother didn't understand and said "Him and his wife are religious, that's a good thing". Knowing, I don't like religion. But I told her "Sure, religion is great if you believe in that kind of thing. But Pence is a bible humper! He is so religious, he's nutty. Under Pence women wouldn't even have rights!". Then she said "Maybe that's a good thing".
EXCUSE ME, WHAT?!
I know she was born in the 1930s, but she loves working. She can never just stop and rest and can't stand being at home unless she is doing something. But to say that is just disgusting and I can't fathom that she even raised me, thinking like that. I love her, but no.
Sure, some old traditions are great, but not allowing women to have a say on whether they have crotch goblins and whether or not they're allowed to pursue careers and such?
Oof.

Wow no offence, but I'm surprised you're as well adjusted as you are being raised by someone like that. Its sucks that religion makes people pick a side rather then stand together, but if we let their ignorance affect us then we are no better then them. Keep your chin up and practice patience to help you deal with situations like that. Peace

I don't think I'm well adjusted. I hate religious people most of the time bc of her. But other than that i guess I'm well adjusted? But thank you!

@AccursedHalo Your not religious which is why I say you're well adjusted lol, but yea try not to let them bother you too much they use your anger as an excuse to buy other people saying you're mad cause you're not X-tian.

My family is all Trump supporters as I am also so there are no arguments about politics.

Well, the entire family except for one despises Trump because of the way he acts. But there are still disputes between my mother and I even when we are on the same side. She is... extreme.

You need to explain it all as if you were talking to a five year old and perhaps several times with lots of examples.

My moms the same way. Republican ladies blow my mind as much as black christians and atheist conservatives.

She isn't any party. She doesn't even vote. She just likes who she likes. So, I guess libertarian like me? Lmao! But, it blew my mind!!!

Yeah Is she a first or second gen immigrant by any chance? A lot of times immigrant values line up with the GOP and it's similar to how we forced religion and conservatism on slaves in the early generations. A lot of black people still struggle to shed that mental bondage.

Even the later voluntary generations of people of color that immigrate often loudly and devoutly convert themselves in an attempt to side with the most aggressive policies as a form of stockholme syndrome. I think it's an effort to speed assimilate into ones new culture and not be in danger of being thought an outsider as a defense mechanism under duress, in a lot of ways that they might not realize themselves.

@Wurlitzer her father was an immigrant, so i guess second gen? But she doesn't align with any part of the government. She thinks our entire government is shit. Which, I have to agree with bc they all act like children but still

@AccursedHalo lol yeah true that. I just meant she aligns with conservatives on core principles like thinking women shouldnt have rights and that religion is a sign of being upstanding. Only one party is blatantly allowed to be sexist racist and overtly fundamentalist in the daylight but yeah most of the dems could stand to grow a pair of gonads. All the awesome young women of color we've just elected is a sign that hopefully things are changing but they can't change fast enough.

I understand where your frustration is coming from. I think sometimes people show their disagreement to a position by saying something that flies in the face of everything they have done and achieved in their life, without really thinking about its content. It's a known defense mechanism and a glance at a random comment section on Youtube would reveal a few examples of what I mean. It's like when someone says "I would kill X if I'm given the chance to" when killing is against everything they stand for. Obviously, I don't know anything about your mother, but given what you have described here, I see a lot of similarities. I think she was just defending the whole "religion is a virtue" thing and was willing to go to great lengths to "prove" her point.

That's actually a really good explanation. I didn't even think about it like that.
