I take it a lot of you heard about the recent slaying of a illegally trespassing missionary off the coast of Burma, on North Sentinel Island? The natives of this island are stone age, and have not even mastered fire! They also have no immunity to the diseases of "civilized" people. Mere exposure to them could decimate their numbers, and do the fact that they kill outsiders, it is illegal to get within three miles of the island, per Indian law. This little fool thought he could "save" their souls, even if it meant breaking the law. If it was not for religion, this young man would still be alive. As the late Christopher Hitchens wrote; "Religion poisons everything".

It's really hard to know if a vocation is truly altruistic or ego-driven. My experience as a Christian makes me think it's the latter. It's so sad the man died but how could anyone save him from himself?

I read something about how it wasn't his first time trying to make contact with the natives either but that he had tried a few other times before.

Three times. The third attempt got him killed!

I'll have to admit ... there have been times when, faced with overzealous, holier-than-thou types, were it legal, I might have fired up my bow and arrow too !

Do you know where you can get archery lessons? We are troubled by doorbell pushers round here.

@Fernapple Might be fun to electrify the buttons - so they get zapped !

He must have been made delusional by religious indoctrination, and the belief that God/Jesus made him all powerful, since no one could be so stupid as to not think that. One: He did not speak their language. Two: They did not speak English; and three: Walking towards uncontacted , hostile and frightened people holding something (his bible ) aloft and pointing it at them, was not good body language either. Only delusion could make you do that.
