I've been making an observation and would like to see what you think. It appears to me there are more religious females than male. This is puzzles me as the bible was clearly written for and by men seeking to maintain domination over females. Do you think this is true? Why? Are there more male “nonbelieviers” than female?
Religious organizations were set up by and for men in large part. Meanwhile, women tend to be more sensitive, more intuitive, more spiritually inclined. There are getting to be more and more women in church leadership positions.
Not every religious organization goes strictly by the Bible. IMO true religion is personal and subjective. Organizations are just for social support.
Christianity, especially Roman Catholicism and Mormonism are designed to appeal to middle aged women.
Firstly they hold up a roll model and aspirational figures for Mothers of grown children, Mother Mary and Heavenly Mother respectively.
A powerful female figure who is powerful because she has dedicated her life to the being a mother and nothing else. This gives a lot of women a feeling of vindication if they have not pursued a career or dreams of their own.
Secondly middle aged women are the back bone of the church community, it gives them value, makes them useful, they clean, they bake, they provide and arrange floral decoration, they fund raise all the skills of motherhood can be brought to bare for the glory of god and make them feel indispensable. As a bonus too they gain authority over younger women as time goes on, a powerful driving force.
Thirdly the promise of reward in heaven for being a "good woman" for sacrificing her life for home family and husband, for tolerating abuse, pain and often ravages on their own body by years of unappreciated hard labour.
Lastly the abnegation of responsibility, of course they are "only women" and so cannot be expected to do the actual hard work, because god has given them suffering, periods, pregnancy, menopause, "women's problems" and of course dying in child birth, all that makes up for occasional lapses and guarantees them a place as a handmaiden of the Lord.
So what if the Bible says they are second class citizens, should sit down and shut up, should worship their menfolk and be stoned to death for being what they were born if they don't cover up so as not to lead men in to sin.
This should not matter anyway as they are not supposed to waste their time read the bible anyway when their female minds could not possibly understand it, they have priest to tell them the bits they need to know, do that and it heavenly bliss forever being a good wife in the hear after forever.
I mean damn it what more could she want?
Amazingly for thousands of years this line of bullshit has worked and kept the lady plebs in line and paying up.
This is probably only true in particular forms of Christianity and also within particular geographical locations . Islam and Judaism certainly have more visible male adherents along with Sikhism. The irony of Christianity is that it was originally a poor person’s religion and it’s journey through the Roman Empire and into Europe has created an elite over-arching exclusive ideology.
I honestly think it is because men would be limited as to what they can do if they were believers...religion invades all aspects of people's lives and books like the Bible were probably written more for social control rather than control over one sex or the other...
By making certain things "moral" issues or putting it in the book of rules, things like disease could be prevented (don't eat pork...trichinosis...), families could retain their lineage (thou shalt not commit adultery...hey, they needed to know if it was their kid), etc. Look at each rule and then look at what was happening socially and culturally...nice way to control the masses...certain parts of the Bible were cherry picked to fit the political needs of the time as well (look at the Church of England tying themselves directly to God...making sure the kings and queens were considered chosen by God)...
I think women wanted reason not to have sex after having babies...the church gives them plenty of ammo not to do so...or to not perform certain acts of sex...the Bible is riddled with sexual taboos...
Men, on the other hand, many, want to drink, fuck, swear, and be "heathens"...the church frowns on all of that...
Domination...I sometimes question who really dominated and at what point in time did the tables get turned? How did we go from the strong women of Egyptian, Roman, Greek and Viking days to meepy women after that?
@thinktwice Linda, I always look forward to your comments. You have the ability to make me understand something or at least help sort it out..
(The comments that follow are assuming consenting adults.)
So often I am aware of women be willing to leave their convictions on the bedside table while men have long since left them at the door, probably the outside door at that. It sounds as though what you might be saying is women MAY not mind these religious edicts as much as we may have been led to believe? The way you are explaining it it seems that way.
It seems I hear more stories of more women having more problems becoming a "non believer" then men. Personally, I never had a problem with wearing a scarlet A (atheist) around my neck and women seem to cling on longer to or are slower to brush off the "rules" of the bible.
I hope you can make sense of my thoughts here.
@kgoodyear I don't know the answers to a lot of things...you and other ask questions and I start thinking of my own experiences, do research, etc. Learning is an evolving process, so rely on others to give me something to think about, change my mind, adopt something new, etc.
I base my comments on the fact that...in my years, I have bedded many so called male church goers and the reason for their infidelity or foray into kinkier sexual acts is because their wives have used church as a means not to have marital relations or the kind they want...so yes, maybe they don't mind some of the teachings if it serves this purpose.
Women also feel responsibility for the moral upbringing of children...since I am not a mother, perhaps it is why I feel freer to not have the church as the guiding light for morality for the children.
Maybe by getting more comments from the women on this site, or maybe in their profiles, you can see why and how women became atheist? Maybe more events happened to turn them away from religion...like abuse from a priest? abuse from a "christian" man?
